The heavens declare the glory of God;
the firmament proclaims the works of his hands.
Day unto day pours forth speech;
night unto night whispers knowledge.
There is no speech, no words;
their voice is not heard;
A report goes forth through all the earth,
their messages, to the ends of the world.
He has pitched in them a tent for the sun.
This selection from Psalm 19 highlights the never-ending flow of time from day to night, ad infinitum, due to God’s creativity, wisdom, and power. Day and night don’t need to announce themselves to us with words – we can simply look for ourselves, see either the presence or absence of light, and understand what part of time we are experiencing.
Likewise, God doesn’t need to announce Himself to us with words. We can look at the intricate beauty of the heavens and the natural world around us to see and understand God’s influence in creation. And like all things that are of God, these silent messages are not hidden or kept apart from any of us. From where you sit now, to the other side of the world, any one of us can take a step outside and see the marvelous work of God.
Prayer: God, often times I am so busy with the daily routine of my life that I ignore the simple proof of Your goodness and glory that exists all around me. Help me to take the time to see and appreciate the beautiful world You have created. These things we pray through Christ our Lord, amen.
